The hotels we’re watching this autumn

A quiet Kyoto street of traditional wooden storefronts

Six openings worth planning a trip around — and two worth waiting a season for.

Every autumn brings a wave of openings, and most of them will be excellent in their second year rather than their first. We visit early anyway, because the first season is when a property tells you what it actually cares about.

The ones we are watching this year have something in common: they were built around a place rather than dropped into it. That shows up in small decisions — where breakfast is served, how the staff talk about the town, whether the best room faces the view or the road.

Two of them we would happily send you to now. The others we would give a season, and they are worth the wait. If you are planning something for next spring, this is the moment to have the conversation.
